PHUKET 2011

Our biggest tour yet! 20 or so netballers plus various groupies, supporters, photographers, umpires & scorers descended on Phuket to stamp the Tigers ethos on an unsuspecting community. After checking into our lush accommodation at Manathai Resort, Surin Beach, and a restful night with hardly any antics (no tv's in the pool!), the netballers headed to the British International School to take on the Phuket Bees.

The netball competition was ferocious. Fortunately the Tigers had paid no attention to the Bees' claims of lacking fitness, and were ready. We fielded two full teams, had a combined team with girls both Bangkok & Phuket, and faced one full team from Phuket. After several tough games, by time the finals came around the Phuket Bees were undefeated, and our Tigers Margaritas team had only been beaten by the Bees.

The final was a tough, even match, but the Tigers got up to win by the narrowest of margins - ONE GOAL!!! Thanks so much to the Phuket Bees for putting on such an awesome tourney, Bumrungrad International Hospital for being tour sponsors, and special props to the Bee with the brainwave of freezing quarters of orange for a delightful refreshing snack!
After the games we went back to the hotel for the REAL business of the tour: sunbaking by the pool & on the beach.
The group festivities continued into the night with a gorgeous sunset dinner on the beach.
After which the girls who were determined to keep the party going headed to Patong, and while what happened there now remains a source of speculation and rumor, rest assured that what goes on tour, stays on tour!

Season 2010-2011

Well it's finally here! The new season is about to get under way, and there are some important changes to take note of.

Fees for this season have changed - and the net result is lower prices!

*Membership fee: 1000 THB
*BNL fee: 1500 THB
*Uniform cost (if req'd): 1000 THB

The membership fee has been changed so that you pay the same price, whether you are a footballer, a netballer or a social member. Simple!

The BNL fee has been subsidized by the club - Tigers will be paying less than other netballers in the league :D

The uniforms are still looking great, so we aren't changing them this season, only new members will need to purchase.

Secondly, our Division 1 team, Tigers Gold, will be on hiatus while we consolidate numbers and develop talent in div 2. So if you are keen to step a notch, consider joining Tigers White. Tigers Black is still the team for you if you just wanna have fun!

Sensational Saigon 2010

Tigers Netball have returned from another fantastic tour, this time to the beautiful city of Saigon. Saigon Shooters netball team did a great job hosting Thailand and the Laos Mahouts for the inaugural Tri-Nations Tournament. They put on a fabulous bbq (tended by our own ex-Tiger Kevin Hornblower) and supplied beers after the game.

With 5 teams playing, Tigers Gold came equal third with Laos, and Tigers Black brought up the rear but strategically used the earlier exit to get a head-start on the beers. The two Saigon teams were very impressive and took out the top spots.

The Tigers team faired no better in the boat-race, and a certain member will be excluded from future boat-racing events after firstly complaining about having to put an upturned beer-mug in her hair, then taking a break during said boat-race.

Memorable moments included Marta Newport’s having to travel through Pakistan and Borneo, with a brief stopover at McMurdo Sound to get to the game after her flight from Phuket was cancelled, and several Tigers Football WAGs spending way too much money snapping up artwork, clothing, linen & lacquer-ware. Best quotes from Marta “But I’m just a poor backpacker, I can’t afford to pay XXX dollars for these 3 tablecloths and 2 duvets…” and Nuch Cox “I’m Thai so you will give me a discount”.

This tour was the last for Tigers superstars Cookie & Tash – we’ll really miss you girls!!

AFL Grand Final Day 2009

After loads of hard work & preparation - well done Marta, Libby, Andy, Yoda & everyone else who contributed, we had a fantastic day celebrating the AFL Grand Final 2009 - Saints vs. Cats - at the Australian Pub & BBQ on Sukhumvit Soi 11. The bravest volunteers arrived at 7am to set up, which was hard work but lots of fun.

Certain volunteers refused to put up any decorations for the Cats.....

The staff were great!

The game was really tense!

But you didn't have to be a winner to be a grinner.

Everyone had a blast!

Tigers Netball do World Environment Day

Lured by the tantalising promise of a sausage sizzle & beers, some of the girls from Thailand Tigers Netball made their way to Samut Prakan on the first Sunday in June to take part in a mangrove tree planting Family Fun Day, organized by Plant-A-Tree-Today to commemorate World Environment Day. “We just want to give something back, after taking so much,” quipped Cookie Chaos.

Dressed in our funky mud-protection ninja boots and armed with the mangrove saplings we were intent to plant, we made our way out to the mangroves through knee-deep (well almost knee-deep, certainly shin-high) gloopy mud and marauding mosquitoes. The tree planting was a bit of hard, dirty work, but very rewarding.
Cookie Chaos managed to suppress the strongest of urges to start a mud-slinging fight, for which we were all very grateful. Planting done, we got down to the serious business of the day, which was relaxing in the shade, while drinking beer and consuming delightful sausages.
We’re pleased to report that PATT’s Family Fun Day managed to plant 220 mangroves, each of which will remove around 500kgs of carbon from the atmosphere over the next 30-40 years. PATT would like to thank the sponsors of the day: Pepsi, OrientSkys & Slim Jims (great snags Slim Jim!), as well as their volunteer helpers, particularly Tigers Netball’s own Claire (aka Riser). Tigers Netball triumph in Laos!

Tigers Netball returned victorious from Laos and what a great tour it was!

Loaded up with snacks, drinks and our Fab Charley Browns Tour Ts, we boarded the 8pm overnight train to the Laos border. The champers was cracked, the bruschetta appetisers, cheese & dips were plated and the Tour began!! An hour and a half later the train still hadn't left the station but who cared.....we were having a great time!

We finally left Bangkok in our luxurious first-class party-sleepers (and thank goodness we decide to go first, having checked out the rest of train) and the tour began in earnest!! We were told off for being way too noisy & having too much fun by all & sundry, not least a grumpy old bag who accused us of behaving like 16-year-old school girls on their first train trip. We took that as compliment and didn’t let it slow us down.

Many, many, many hours, much champagne, not a bad night's sleep, 2 trains and a van later we finally arrived in Vientiane!

Despite arriving late for the game (not all our fault, blame the dodgy Songtaew driver), we were warmly welcomed by the Laos Mahouts, who were all geared up with loads of players, spectators, water and even a fruit plate!

The game itself was a lot of fun and we were quite evenly matched. At one stage in the fourth quarter the two teams were only 1 point apart, but more experience and games as a team behind them saw the Tigers pull ahead in the last minutes to a sound victory.

Final score 23 - 15 TIGERS VICTORIOUS!!

That night the Laos Mahoots took us out for a fab traditional meal and lots and lots of wine and beer! We can't go into too many details, of course, because WHAT GOES ON TOUR STAYS ON TOUR. Hey Cookie!

Overall impression on Vientiane: very quiet but warm, welcoming people and great food. And it's cheap!

Who are the Thailand Tigers?

Hello and welcome to Thailand Tigers Netball. We're coming into our 4th year in the Bangkok Netball League, and have developed a reputation as a team who love great netball, awesome tours and the best social life in Bangkok!

We currently have three teams; Tigers Yellow, Tigers Black and Tigers White, all in the 2nd division. Tigers Yellow is looking to graduate to Division 1 at the end of 2010, so we are playing a competitive game! Tigers White & Tigers Black are for newbies and girls who just wanna have fun! So whether you've got a strong netballing background and are after a competitive game, or if you haven't played since primary school and simply fancy a run around and an opportunity to meet new people then there's a place for you on a Tiger team.

Both teams play in the Bangkok Netball League (www.bangkoknetball.com). Games are once a week on Monday nights. We play at NIST on Sukhumvit Soi 15, a 10 minute walk from Asok BTS. The season runs from September to May.

Our club loves to tour internationally in the region, whether it's a chicks tour to Bali or a combined guys and girls footy & netball tour to Vietnam, Cambodia or Laos we always have a blast. Check out our tour news for a sneak peek...

Great win last night by Tigers Gold!

Excellent defending with Anna, Anita and Claire getting in some excellent touches and intercepts, not only preventing a few goals being shot but the ball even entering the goal gircle.
Well done and thanks Stacey playing an excellent defence game the first quarter.

Carlene and Jackie were right on the money to ensure our score line of 21-30 against the Southerners. Sammy had a great game as WA putting in some fast balls to the goal circle for the shooters. Isla was outstanding in both defence and attack as centre defending well, attacking all over the court and feeding the ball well to the goal circle - deservedly getting herself best and fairest.

Well done grrlllss! Have a good rest to fire up for the next game in two weeks time!

Tigers Black def Tassie Devils - 30 to 23

Grrrrrrr Grrrrr another win!!!

What a fab game it was last night against the Tassie Devils. It felt like a pretty close game all the way, and we were actually surprised by the final score of 30 - 23 to the Tigers. What a win!

The first quarter we (Marta) accidentally gave Stacey away to the Golds who were a player short and so we were short one player, but yet again a Londoner stepped up and helped us out. It was a close quarter and the Devils attack was strong, but we felt good and held our own.

In the second quarter Stacey came back to us and this strengthened our brilliant defence team of Liz, Stacey and Cookie. Libby and Kath shared C and WA and formed a strong attack and Marta and Toni were on fire and bringing home the goals. We felt really good, everyone was enjoying the game and the positioning felt right.

The third quarter felt a little tight with the Devils having a run of goals, but Liz and Cookie put their necks on the line a couple of times and did some lovely footwork. We analysed their strategy and put in some techniques to minimise their power and this seemed to work for us nicely.

The final quarter was pure joy. Fantastic defence intercepts by Stacey and Toni put real pressure on the Devils attack and we gelled beautifully in our own attack to bring the ball home. Kath and Libby worked together in a beautiful synchronicity to get the ball down to our goal and the ball seemed to glide into the hoop every time. It was just meant to be!

A special thank you to Rhino for his encouraging support from the sidelines as our token cheer squad!

What an enjoyable and exciting game we had last night against Southerners Gold!

The first quarter started off with a sub from our Londoners friend Heather, as we only 6 players to start! Heather was fab as WD and Lizzy ran wild as Centre. The first quarter ended 5-3 their way, but we felt good and were enjoying the game.

Cat arrived to take over from Heather in the 2nd quarter and the defence trio of Cat, Cookie and Emma were brilliant at keeping the ball away from their goal circle. We were ahead by the end of the second quarter, although don't know by how much as a certain superstitous co-captain didn't want to ruin our run by checking the score!

The beginning of the 3rd quarter saw Prez Lizzie struck down by a mysterious stomach bug, but luckily Joy arrived to step up and continue the magic in WA. Previous body-on-the-line medal winner Kath took on Centre and more than once we feared for her life as she ignored any possible risks to herself and took one for the team. At the end of the 3rd we were up by 3 points (note that co-captain's requests of score anonymity were ignored) and we were all fired up.

This was it, do or die, we were focused and motivated sweatballs and gelling absolutely beautifully as a team. Defence were doing a great job, the attacks were all over the court, Joy doing some amazing twisty things with her body to get the ball, and Lianne and Marta in goal were just getting them in one after another! And the motivational yelling from the co-captains was driving the Southerners nuts!

Tigers Gold def Harrow 21 - 17

September 15

A brand new season and a great new look to the Golds - in terms of uniforms and new players! The first quarter got off to a nervous start with the girls getting to know each other's movements and tactics - and seemingly getting to know the basics of throwing and catching again! We unfortunately fell behind by 3 goals despite the brilliant defensive play of Sammy and Anita.

However one quarter was all we needed to shake off the cobwebs! A few inspirational tactical changes made by the new co-captain Carlene going into the second quarter - the new shooting combo of Jackie and Joey together with the attacking force of Carlene and Isla seemed to pay off as we began converting our chances and building up a lead as approached the half time mark.

The third and fourth quarter saw more superb defensive play by the Golds as Harrow worked hard to edge their way back into the game. Sammy and Anita continued to make a huge number of vital interceptions in and around the circle, supported by Anna who produced some spectacular flying leaps down the wing. At the final whistle the girls can be proud of a great first performance and a new team that has a lot of potential! A fantastic start to the 2008 - 09 season.

Well, there is no doubt whatsoever that although Tigers Black did not end the night in triumph - we sure looked damn good out there in a our new sleek back and gold lycra numbers - not one wedgy adjustment to be witnessed during play!

Dressed now for both style and comfort, some suggested that the new unifoms feel so comfy, they likened it to being in the nude. Bit disturbing actually. In the inaugural first game of the season, Tigers Black welcomed many new faces. And despite some having only been on a netball court a hand full of time (some never), everyone managed to get a run and try out a few different positions. So naturally, with many quarterly change overs, our game was a little bit incohesive - however, its very clear to see that there is not only some natural talent amongst the those new to the game, but most importantly, a lot of get-up-and-go and willingness to try something new. Last but by far, not least, it was a fun and friendly match - which means the team weren't too disappointed at the final score - 27 (Mad Dogs) / 9 (Tiger Black).

Khao Yai mai?

Due to less-than-desirable weather conditions and a general aversion to monotony, the Tigers girls have decided that Khao Yai would be a better choice than Samet for our girls' weekend on 5th-7th September.

Anna is organising a van and accommodation for a weekend of indulgence, adventure and debauchery for all the interested ladies. Please let Anna know as soon as possible if you would like to join the Khao Yai bandwagon - 0850632442 or thailandtigersnetball@gmail.com.

For those of you new to Bangkok (or those of you who are just hermits), Khao Yai is an awesome national park only about 2 hours north east of Bangkok. There are loads of cool things to see and do, including mountain biking, rock climbing, waterfalls, elephants and quad biking. We will be staying at a nice place (TBA) with a pool and hopefully a spa on-site!

TTN's first netball training session for this season will be held at on Monday 25th August at Trinity Complex - here are the deets...

Time: 6.30pm warm up (and a bit of chit chat) if you can make it, 7pm start, finishing @ 8pm

Place: 8th floor Trinity Complex, Narathiwat Soi 3 (phiphat 2), BTS Chong Nonsi

Directions: Walking up Narathiwat Soi 3 from BTS Chong Nonsi (711 and Family Mart on either side of Soi entrance), Trinity Complex is on the left hand side less than 100 metres from Narathiwat Road. Look out for "The Foodie" restaurant on the corner and head up that driveway. When you get to the 8th floor head outside to the basketball court.

Cost: 50 bt for court hire/netball slush fund.

This session will be a great opportunity to meet new girls, start working out 1st & 2nd Division teams, look at positions, and have a bit of a pre-season work out, so please try to get down. This will also be one of Coach Joey's final training sessions before she heads off on another adventure. Finally, if you haven't paid up Tigers Membership fee, this will be a great opportunity to do so, and also pick up your Tigers T-shirt.

As promised, the Twaiters, Puddles, Vron and Wifey were sent off with a bang and a splash on Saturday night - for those who can't remember, the night featured norg wars, gumboots in the pool and many a toast to those departing.

Triumphant in her trickery, Joey arrived with Vron and U-Peg in tow at Spring yesterday looking very relieved as the Tigresses surprised Vron with her Bangkok baby shower. Dressed in a gorgeous grey GAP hoodie, Vron held back the tears while unwrapping many presents organised by Treasurer Libby for each section of her baby's day. The stylish presents included a handmade baby sling and an individualised new Tigers membership bodysuit for the little girl to strut around Tassie in.

The TTN commitee want to thank everyone for making the day extremely special for Vron and we wish her all the best for her new adventure. We will miss you Vron!

All the girls from Thailand Tigers Netball send a big, heartfelt thanks and congratulations for a job well done to outgoing president Liv Thwaites. The club owes so much to Liv for establishing Tigers Netball and for making so many newcomers' transitions to Bangkok easier and more fun! Best wishes to the Twaiters for their move back to Oz.

The club would also like to congratulate Lizzie Player on her election as TTN president. We wish Lizzie the best of luck and will give her all our support for the year ahead.

Monday Night Social Mixed Netball

If you are interested in checking out the Bangkok netball scene before the next season starts in August and would like to meet some great people while you're at it, come along to the Monday night mixed social netball games.

The games are held at NIST (New International School of Thailand) on Sukhumvit Soi 15 (Asok BTS). No need to pre-register - just drop in at 7pm to be randomly drawn into a team. Play starts at 7.15pm.

Social mixed netball is a great way to meet some of the Tigers and players from other teams and to decide if you would like to play the next season. Many of the mixed players are first-timers - no experience is required!

Among all the checked flags, squealing tyres and spunky suits the Tigers guys and girls battled it out last Saturday, 31st May at the Sugar Beat Go-Karting track.

Winning the glory of best dressed racer was Marta, who managed the hottest outfit for the girls. As for the racing times, they were mysteriously lost a few beers later...

Southerners BKK International Tournament

International Clubs Converge on Bangkok for Southerners Netball Tournament

From as far and wide as Singapore and Vietnam, eight clubs will battle it out in an international melee at NIST on Saturday, 24th May 2008 organised by the Southerners Netball Club. In a gruelling round robin, each team will play no less than five half-hour games as they vie for the coveted number one place.

Come along and support your favourite team as you marvel in the athleticism and skill of Asia's finest netballers and hold your breath in nail-biting, edge-of-your-seat suspense. Tour t-shirts will be on sale on the day and food and drink is available at the canteen. All the teams would greatly appreciate your cheers throughout the day!

And of course, what is an International Netball Tournament without a party or two? The tour's main sponsor, The Londoner Brew Pub & Restaurant (http://www.the-londoner.com/) will be holding welcome drinks for all the teams and their supporters and a post-tournament party will be held at Coyote Mexican Bar and Restaurant in Silom.

Tigers Bombard Bali for the 2008 International Netball Tour

After a fitting send off at tour sponsor Charley Brown’s (where the international contenders showed off the super-cool tour t-shirt while drinking margaritas by the jug) the Tigers set off to Bali, travelling in two groups. The first group, comprising Captain “Lotus” Liv, Pocket Rocket Kath & Lizzy the Librarian, arrived on the Friday morning had a smooth trip. The second group, comprising Marta “Go-Low” Newport, Jumping Joey, Vron “V-Ron” and Chelsey (babe, we’re gonna need a nickname) were not so lucky….

Poor Vron (like many before her) hadn't known that she needed 6 months on her passport to travel to Indonesia, and she only had three months left before expiry. She was pulled up at Jakarta airport for a water stain on the passport, but when Immigration saw the expiry date you could hear the cash-register sound reverberating through the terminal and dollar signs lighting up their eyes. Cha-Ching!!They had taken her into a room on account of the water stain, but when she hadn't come out in 20 minutes Marta went to investigate. The interrogation hadn't gotten very far because the gorilla they had sent in didn't actually speak any English. But then they put their good cop/bad cop routine into play, and made some progress.

Fortunately Marta was savvy in such things (she used to live in Jakarta), so she asked if they could pay the 'fee' for travelling on the nearly-expired passport. After lots of to-ing & fro-ing, negotiations began. Starting price was US$200 (fortunately the girls had a pool of USD on account of visas needing to be purchased in that currency.) By this point all the girls were in the room, turning on maximum charm, leaning over the desk to expose cleavage, flirting outrageously, promising to hook up the immigration guys with their cute friends, basically doing anything to get the negotiations over the line!! Finally they settled on a reasonable amount; Vron was given a manual visa, and the girls were on their way to Bali!

Game Day

Bali brought two teams on the day (http://www.balinetball.com/), with all of the players looking ominously tall. Our first game was against the Bali Flames, and at half time we were all square, having played a tightly contested game. However, the Flames managed to analyse our play and came back with a vengeance to win 19-10. We took a rest while the two Bali teams played each other, this time the Flames beating the Dragons. Feeling inspired by watching them lose, and also changing into our lucky red bibs, we took to the Dragons and played an awesome match, winning by one goal.

The third game was an optional grand final, and once we’d bargained the umpire down to 8 minute halves (hey, we’re from Thailand, we can’t help haggling!) we set out to play the Flames again. It was a fantastic match with all the girls playing at their best. At half time we didn’t even want to know the score, preferring to focus on our game, and also having a great time. When the final whistle blew we had lost by 1 goal, but we were really happy with our performance, having recovered from the thrashing they gave us in the first match.

Game highlights included Lizzy in her first outing as GK impressing her opponents and spectators alike with a seamless blend of defense and Riverdance, the likes of which had not been seen since Kath & Kim (hey, I was told to keep my arms at my sides!) - and Marta herding the opposition away with her seagull-like squawks so that Liv could take a shot. We Tigers are nothing if not innovative! All the girls played really well and we were mega impressed by V-Ron’s stamina and Joey’s ability to be everywhere at once. Chelsey did brilliantly in a position she’s rarely played (WD) and Kath was pulling out all the moves (namely tapping the ball back into play while flying mid air). The umpiring was excellent (provided by a lady who used to play in Australia at the State level) and there were no injuries - a big thanks to Seksan and Bangkok Hospital (http://www.bangkokhospital.com/) for the first aid kit.

The Bali girls showed great form by providing a big esky filled with Bintangs for after the game, and also gave us a voucher each for a manicure. Three cheers for Bali!

Post Match Antics

After the game we headed back to our gorgeous resort (well done Marta!) and while the sensible girls Kath, Vron & Chelsey headed back to get changed for dinner, Liv, Joey, Marta & Lizzy took their post-game enthusiasm to the pool and celebrated by jumping in, uniforms and all!

We had dinner with the Bali girls at Rumours in Seminyak, where we presented the best players from each Bali team with Tigers t-shirts. After that we hit a club in Kuta, which had an outside bar & swimming pool, where copious jugs of margaritas were consumed. We finished the night at the Circle K convenience store for hotdogs & burgers at 3am. Yum!

Sunday started with a lovely team brunch at a beachfront bar/restaurant. Only one of the Bali girls (the captain) made it, but that was good in a way, because the lot of us hadn't really spent much time just relaxing as a group. Chelsey was off to the airport after that, Marta, Kath & Lizzy went shopping, while Liv, V-Ron and Joey went back to the resort for some pool time.

Later in the afternoon SOME girls hit the pool for happy hour, and proceeded to get drunk on half price Blue Lagoons, Pina Coladas & Bintangs, while OTHER girls went for pedicures. SOME girls got quite trashed in the pool, and were seen to be bumming cigarettes off fat German men at the pool bar, much to the disapproval of their fat German wives. You can rest assured that the night only degenerated from that point onwards, so at this point we will enact the “whatever happens on tour, stays on tour” credo, and leave it at that!

So to wrap it up, the Tigers had an awesome time in Bali without actually stepping foot on the beach!

Back in Black but Bumped Off by the Better Team on the Day

Tigers Black 14 v Soi 8 17
The crowd was alive with energy as we arrived for finals night; marking the end of the netball year and the tigers’ first successful year. Tigers Black were first up, playing a fiery 34 minutes against Soi 8. Having really come together as a team over the last few weeks, we provided a strong opposition and rose to the challenges provided. Playing well, our fabulous wings (Lizzy and Sarah) and centre (Libby) provided the excellent support enabling our strong attacking force to penetrate their defence allowing scoring duo Toni and Marta to work their magic and get one in the net first – resounding ggggrrrrs echoed around as we returned to centre, caught a breath and continued the our half with strong determination to keep ahead. Soi 8 fought back, playing a fast paced game which kept us on our toes (and sometimes on our knees), despite managing to break through our defence, scoring twice in a row, defence displayed some quality under the net action, ready for rebounds and moving the ball on. With a roaring side line, we were spurred on, knowing that we were providing our own challenges. At halftime, in score-reversal of our last final meeting, we were narrowly ahead: 8-7. A few substitutions meant our ever increasing ambush all got to demonstrate their tiger spirit. After a few minutes to reacquaint partnerships and gauge our opponents substitutions; we provided another fast paced, quick thinking, rapid passing round meaning goals were shot and defended by our new duos Toni & Stacey, and Robson & Bridie. Team dynamics held strong, so that when the final whistle finally blew; with anticipation mounting…we had…drawn. I don’t think we’d ever drawn in the entire season, and here we were, the biggest night of the netball calendar with a standoff, a deadlock, an even-steven stalemate. With no momentous victory on either behalf we entered some encouraging, yet serious team talk from Robson and Marta (future Cap potential?!) Heads up, we were about to enter 4 minutes of extra time… 240 seconds, that’s all we had to win or lose. Tension mounting. The whistle blew. We were off. Our tremendous effort, active determination, and perseverance held strong, despite Soi 8’s first and second goals; tiger spirit never faded. We’d come so far in the last year, we’d fight til the end. Despite valiant efforts, we were unable to penetrate their defence. An excellent game, one in which we truly showed our team colours, had unfortunately ended in a Tiger Black defeat: 17 – 14. Grrrrr….

Tigers Black 8 vs Londoners 12
Whilst clearly being the loudest supporters on the side lines; spurring Tiger Golds on, the opportunity arose to play the Londoners, with a battle for third and forth places. We readily accepted, and re-gathered our team. Having beaten the Londoners in our last pre-finals match, we knew beating them was a possibility – they had some new players from our previous meeting so it took a while for our legs to warm up and work out their dynamics. Similar sides played both first and second halves, with the addition of Chelsey. On such an important night on the netball calendar, it was impossible to slow the pace down – everyone wanted a piece of the action. We demonstrated great marking, superb passing, we thought about our footwork and our spacing, and possession started off quite equal. Unfortunately for us, despite tiger spirit shining through and perseverance which ensued throughout our game we were defeated. Perhaps it was their new players, perhaps it was the fact that we’d sat and rested, believing that we’d played our last game of the season, perhaps the old saying ‘quit whilst you’re ahead’ ringing true, perhaps I should just stop making excuses… After a superb match, one which showed us to be a fine and strong team, we were beaten by the Londoners, final score Tigers Black 8, Londoners 12.

Tigers Flag Tilt Ends in Heartache: Gold Undone By Well Drilled Opposition

Tigers Gold 18 vs Transpo 28
The first round of the finals drew Golds against Transpo so having won one and lost one in the league games this season we felt confident of a good tough game. Fast-paced from the very start, the action from both sides especially in the goal circles proved thrilling entertainment for the spectators. Joey and V-Ron led a tight attack and Penny and a newly-returned Liv bagged some great shots for the Tigers. Unfortunately, despite some solid defence from Roisin and Nikki, Transpo got off to a flying start that proved insurmountable in the end (28-18). Congratulations go out to the victors who notched up second place overall.

Tigers Gold 12 vs NIST 6
Given an originally unplanned final shot at a placing in the comp, Tigers Gold regrouped against NIST – determined to consolidate a win for the night. A couple of changes were made to freshen up the team, and the Tigers generated an awesome attack which was backed up by some great defensive play from Anna B and Carlene. NIST put up a tough fight for the ball (literally and figuratively) and more than one Tiger came away with a war wound – thankfully V-Ron’s fall wasn’t too serious. Without conceding the lead gained early on, the Golds sealed the victory 12-6 and third place in the comp. Many thanks go out to all the spectators who came to cheer us on, to Carlene for stepping up from the Blacks and to the other teams in the comp for a great season. Congratulations to Southerners for picking up the number one spot.

Tiger Men Triumph in ANZAC Battle

On Saturday 26 April, in front of a large crowd at Kanchanaburi, the Thailand Tigers AFL team defeated the Jakarta Bintangs to win the prestigious ANZAC Cup. The game was played in great spirit with neither side backing down in the contest, prompting former POW Bill Haskell to say, “we never expected the game to be this tough”.
